Corsican gastronomy in Porto Vecchio
Brocciu is a local cheese made with a combination of whey and sheep’s milk. It is a young white cheese that has similarities to ricotta. The sweet creamy flavors pair well with local white wine ‘Ile de Beauté.’
Another local delicacy that pairs beautifully with the local Brocciu is the Jambon Sec, a dry cured and matured Corsican ham, its unique flavor comes from the natural environment as well as the local chestnuts and acorns that the animals feed on.
The finest seafood is found in the numerous restaurants located around the harbor. Other than that, the Corsican cuisine is renowned for its traditional strength, using a great variety of local aromatic herbs which give meals their distinct, authentic taste. You may try the local version of the Bouillabaisse, with mussels, a typical herb pie, or Corsican Cannelloni with bush herbs, and let’s not forget the Corsican Arancellu, a locally renowned strong alcohol flavored with cinnamon and orange.
Local culture
Porto Vecchio is known as the ancient ‘City of Salt,’ a name it received due to its long history of salt production and beautiful salt marshes. Production was halted in 2000 and the land has been taken over by nature. Beautiful flamingos, among other wildlife, can be seen inhabiting the area.
There are also many historical and archaeological landmarks in the area such as the ancient ruins of the Chateau Préhistorique de Tappa, and 11th millennium B.C. Neolithic castle that used the natural rock formations as walls. There is also a tough but rewarding 30-minute hike to the Castellu d’Araghju, an ancient fortress that has beautiful panoramic views of southern Corsica.
The best beach around Porto Vecchio accessible with your yacht rental
Voted as the most beautiful beach in France, you will not want to miss out on visiting the beach of Palombaggia. With a backdrop of pink granite rock formations and luscious green pines it is the perfect place to enjoy a swim in the most incredible transparent waters and beautifully white sand.
While you are towards the south of the island why not hop down to the spectacular blue lagoon of the bay of Santa Giulia, the wonderful clear and shallow waters are great for spending a day in the ocean. The beach is popular for stand-up paddle boarding as the waters are sheltered from the elements and are generally calm.
Cruise to the north of the Gulf of Porto Vecchio to visit the amazing beach of Cala Rossa, one of the nicest beaches in the bay. The particularly long stretch of beach has very fine sand and great shallow clear waters that could match up against a caribbean paradise. A perfect place to spend a day relaxing at the beach.
