Rent a yacht to enjoy Barcelona with Arthaud Yachting
The great port city of Catalonia is one of Europe’s top touristic destinations, on the same level as Venice and Paris. But few of the millions of yearly visitors have the opportunity to discover Barcelona and its surroundings by yacht. With Arthaud Yachting, enjoy the bustling day and night life of Barcelona, its ever-present sun and the magnificent sights of the Costa Brava.
Practical information to visit Barcelona
Best time to visit Barcelona when renting a yacht
A simple answer would be “anytime”. The Catalan metropolis rewards its visitors with 320 days of sun every year and comfortable temperatures throughout the summer. Even the winter can be sunny, dry and mild. Of course, the best months for enjoying the city beaches are May, June, July, August and September, and these are also the most crowded periods.
The best cruising areas in and near Barcelona
Starting from the Barcelona marina, where you can watch the giant cruise ships come and go, sailing along the endless beaches of the Costa Barcelona eastward you’ll reach the port city of Blanes. This is where the spectacular cliffs of the Costa Brava begin. After visiting the magnificent Marimurtra botanical garden, resume your exploration between the orange cliffs dropping straight into the Mediterranean Sea, you’ll find the nice town of Lloret de Mar, and the awesome Tossa de Mar with its old medieval village perched on a rock.
Thanks to your yacht, you can easily continue sailing to the northeast and eventually find the picturesque fishing village of Cadaques, which inspired so many great painters, like Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Pablo Picasso or Marcel Duchamp.
Arthaud Yachting’s recommendation
Time is your most precious ally when visiting Barcelona aboard one of our yacht. The bustling metropolis and its magnificent surroundings are so rich with cultural attractions, foods, natural sights and entertainment opportunities that it will take you a while to enjoy everything. From the Gaudi landmarks, the Gothic city centre, a sailing along the Costa Brava on your private yacht, having fun on Barceloneta beach, and trying out the best bars and restaurants, you will never be bored. Luckily, you will have your private luxury yacht to rest and travel along the scenic coast.
Unmissable visits when renting a yacht in Barcelona
In addition to the sites already mentioned, there are other places in Barcelona that you should not hesitate to visit. You can extend your discovery of the Mediterranean waters and its inhabitants by visiting the aquarium close to the port. If you are a real sailing enthusiast, there is a solution that will satisfy you: the golondrinas. These are small boats that take you on a tour of the city’s coastline (both routes are not allowed for yachts). You can marvel at the Puerta de Europa bridge, the Levante and Poniente quays, the small fishing port, the clock tower… In our opinion, this is a must for a good visit of the city. To get a totally different view of Barcelona, you can also take a helicopter flight over the city.
If you want to discover more unusual places than the classic well-known monuments of the city, you can go to Sant Felip Neri square. Here you will find a small square surrounded by beautiful Renaissance houses and the beautiful octagonal fountain in the centre of the square. It is a peaceful place that is worth a visit.
Another place, another atmosphere, the Ciutadella Park. It is a green oasis where you can relax in a magical environment. Finally, we also recommend the Horta labyrinth. This is the oldest park in the city and from the beginning of the 19th century the king used to hold magnificent receptions here. You can walk through the labyrinth and see many statues. You can also have a picnic in the park or visit the Carlos VI pavilion and its pond.
Finish your visit at the Mirador del Turo de la Rovira, a place a little outside the city, but from which you will have an incredible view of it.
Barcelonese culture and gastronomy
Recommendations for dinner and wine
Barcelona is, of course, filled with countless restaurants and bars. However, a great place to taste the best wines while savouring typical Catalan dishes – with a few original additions – is the Bar del Pla, in the Gothic quarter. While it serves its guests non-stop, you will however need to make a reservation.
In the Eixample quarter you’ll find the best wine list in the city, at the bar Gresca. Its open cuisine prepares some of the most succulent and authentic dishes, and you can choose to stay in the bar, or dine at the more formal restaurant which shares the same kitchen, right next to it.
The Velcro bar is also a good place to have a drink in a very high-class atmosphere.
The Hoffman is run by the chef Mey Hoffman. A very cosy room, incredibly tasty dishes, all prepared by the students of the chef’s school who work in the kitchens of the place. Don’t forget to book your table, the restaurant is very popular!
Let’s finish with a monument of Barcelona’s restaurant scene: Lasarte, run by the starred chef Martín Berasategui Olazábal. It is a unique setting for an introduction to haute cuisine and you can succumb to one of the two 9- or 12-course menus that have made Lasarte’s reputation throughout the world.
Best dishes and foods for your Barcelona meal
Gastronomy is an unmissable part of a visit in Barcelona, as exemplified by the famous Boqueria, its food market with ancient roots. A thousand fragrances await you there, as you stroll between the countless specialized stalls offering a large variety of Mediterranean foods.
Being a great seaport, Barcelona is, of course, rich with seafood dishes. Cod is one of most used fishes, called “Bacalla”. You can also try a black dish, the Arros negre, made of rice, shrimps, squid… and the squid’s black ink. Barcelonese restaurants also like to offer “mar y muntanya” dishes – literally sea and mountain – containing both fish and meat, as in “Mandoguilles amb sipia”.
Taking in the local culture
Many tourists won’t really notice the true Barcelonese culture, as the city has become such a major attraction. However, upon reading the novel “The Shadow of the Wind” written by the much-acclaimed author Carlos Ruiz Zafon, you may use it as a guide through the city and its landmarks.
For a typical Catalan celebration, the week before September 24th is the one of “La Mercè”, celebrating the patron saint of the city, The Virgin of Mercy. It’s a great opportunity to witness the construction of the famous “Castellers”, the human pyramids, and the “sardena “dance.
Another major component of the local culture is the Barca football team, which brings all the locals together at every match. Arthaud Yachting will happily arrange for you to get a VIP pass for a game at Camp Nou.
The best beaches accessible from your yacht rental
Quite interestingly, Barcelona didn’t really have beaches before the end of the 20th century. These were added in an effort to instil a new life in some run-down industrial areas, and the project was so successful that over the past decades Barcelona has developed a true beach-culture rivalling that of Rio de Janeiro or Los Angeles. The most famous of these beaches is Barceloneta, the place to be for sunbathing, beach spots and socializing.
The city has several good beaches. The most beautiful of these is undoubtedly Mar Bella. Set against a backdrop of beautiful gardens, the beach stretches its fine sand to infinity (or almost). A dune hides the beach and provides a ‘protective screen’ for its visitors.
