Formentera gastronomy & local dishes
Seafood is at the heart of the island’s cuisine. With an incredibly high standard of fresh fish and shellfish we highly recommend trying the fresh catch of the day or one of the many seafood rice dishes that frequent the menus such as paella or black squid ink rice. If you are not a fan of seafood there is still an array of delicious meat and vegetarian dishes to choose from.
With such a diverse range of food on offer, it’s no wonder the island has become such a popular destination for luxury cruises and yachts. You can stop off at secluded coves, take in the stunning scenery and even anchor overnight in one of the many sheltered bays.
Peix sec is one of the island’s ancient traditions, fish is salted and hung to dry in the Formentera sun on juniper tree branches and then is crumbled down and put in olive oil. It is used to add flavor in many dishes and salads so you will undoubtedly taste some on your travels.
Enjoy some of the local dessert dishes such as Greixonera and Flaó. Greixonera is best described as a creme caramel sweet bread, often eaten as a morning pastry with a strong spanish coffee. Flaó has a similar texture and flavor profile as cheesecake, although it has a citrus flare to it. Enjoy one after dinner with a licor de hierbas digestive. In addition to enjoying the local food, there are plenty of activities to keep you busy on your vacation. There are also plenty of charter yachts available if you want to explore the coastline at your own pace.
The local culture of Formentera
The three historical sites of Formentera are San Francesc Xavier, Sant Ferran de ses Roques and Pilar de la Mola. Each with its own beautiful church. From these three villages we see a network of roads that lead to ancient ruins of coastal defenses used by the Romans, Moorish and subsequently the Aragons.
Aside from the archaeological history the island maintains certain traditions such as the artisanal market that takes place from May – October each year in the village of San Francesc Xavier. Handcrafted jewelry, clothes and leather goods are for sale amongst other items at the various stalls that take over the main streets of the village.
As to be expected on an island, there are many brokerages that specialize in motor yachts and sailing vessels as well as charter companies offering vacations on both power and sail.
The best beaches accessible from your yacht rental
It’s hard to go wrong here, Formentera’s beaches are some of the best in the Balearic islands. We highly recommend making the most of your private yacht charter and hopping from beach to beach.
Ses Illetes beach is Formentera’s most symbolic beach. It has been declared as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world on multiple occasions. The beach is situated within the Ses Salines d’Eivissa and Formentera natural park, its calm shallow turquoise waters and pristine fine white sand create a perfect paradise for sunbathing and swimming.
As to be expected with such a popular beach, there are many tourist amenities nearby including restaurants, bars, parasailing and windsurfing operators and boat charter companies offering vessels for hire to explore the coastline.
From here you can travel North to the tip of the island where you will find Llevant beach. Due to its access difficulty by land and fewer amenities, this beach is usually much less crowded. Enjoy a private swim here and some snorkeling before retiring to the luxury comfort of your chartered yacht. Also in the North you will find Cala Torta, another secluded beach which is only accessible by foot or by boat.
This makes it an ideal spot for those who are looking to avoid the crowds. The coastline here is truly breathtaking, and you’ll have plenty of time to explore it on your own private yacht charter. Your itinerary is completely flexible so be sure to discuss with your captain what type of experience YOU want to have on your luxury yacht charter vacation!
The next beach to the south is Cavall D’en Borras beach, a beautiful wild and unspoiled beach with views of Ibizan islands Es Vedra and Es Vedranell. The lush smell of botanical junipers that surround the beach call for gin cocktails. A perfect place to enjoy a Negroni as you watch the sunset. There are no coral reefs or resorts here, but the boating is excellent.
Arthaud Yachting’s recommendation

There are endless discoveries to be made with beautiful colorful natural pools, swaps, salt pans, sand dunes and a huge variety of endangered birds, including their famous flamingos that inhabit the swamps from July to September.
